Chapter Twelve Knocking on Heaven’s Door
Knowledge overcomes ignorance as sunlight darkness. —Atmabodha Prakasika CHARLESHADDONtapped a button on his desk, and within seconds, Cathy Smyth walked into the room.
“What can I do for you, sir?”
“I’d love a pot of tea,” Haddon replied, returning her blank smile. “Black this time, not green.”
“Of course, sir.” She scurried out of the office.
Haddon opened his personal notebook and perused the information on the screen with renewed interest. He’d read the report several times before—Trace’s notes, or at least part of them, finally decrypted:
Psychotropic Effects of Initial Sim Protocol: Stage One: Of the initial six volunteer subjects, four showed signs of altered reality and hallucinations, becoming paranoid and delusional. Upon removal of chip, only two showed signs of improvement and ultimately recovered. Of the two remaining test subjects affected, neither responded to removal or drug therapy, and both were subsequently euthanized. The protocol was terminated.
Stage Two: Six volunteer subjects were injected with an anti-anxiety drug before implantation. Two of the six subjects still experienced the same psychotropic effects of the initial study group. Dosage of anti-anxiety drug was increased. Only one of the test subjects reacted favorably. One subject did not improve and was subsequently
euthanized. The protocol was
terminated.
DNA analysis of the test subjects revealed a particular pairing of genes predisposed certain individuals to the psychotropic effects. Continued testing and analysis indicated that a series of injections with a drug and vitamin combination every three weeks for six months prior to chip implantation was successful in preventing the
psychotropic effects of the chip.
Stage Three: Thirty-six subjects tested after receiving vaccination. Only one showed slight psychotropic symptoms. Upon removal of the chip, symptoms abated.
“Sir?” Haddon looked up to see Cathy reenter the office with a tray in her hands. They were trembling slightly, causing the delicate china tea set to ring.
“Please, Cathy,” Haddon said kindly, “put the tray down and tell me what’s on your mind.”
“We have a situation, sir,” she almost squeaked. Her round face was pale, and she was visibly shaken. She didn’t look at him; her eyes focused fixedly on a bookshelf over his shoulder. “The latest security scan indicates our servers have been breached and that data is being sent to another location.”
“Have we located the source of the breach?”
“Dr. Synchack believes that the breach may have originated with the wafers Agents Lane and Anders retrieved in Bern.”
“Is Agent Lane still compliant?”
“Yes, sir. Dr. Synchack does not believe another neutralization is necessary at this time.”
“I see. Thank you, Cathy. Please inform Vasalia that I’ll speak with him shortly. I’ll buzz you if I need you.”
Cathy walked back out of the office, looking relieved.
Haddon glanced back down at Trace’s notes and scanned the pages of electronic data until a single name caught his eye: Jacob Anders. He ran his long fingers over the print, reading down to see what more information, if any, he could glean from the notations.
So Anders has the DNA patterns associated with the psychotropic reactions in the test subjects. Interesting.
He paused for a moment, mulling over the significance of this additional information.
